Areas of Study

Visual Arts Minor | Art History/Visual Arts Joint Major | Course Atlas

Goals for Student Learning & Methods of Assessment

Drawing & Painting

The courses in this area introduce the students to media, techniques, theory and practice of drawing and painting. The students develop skills and aesthetic theory through experimentation with a variety of subjects, materials and techniques. Students are taught on a one-to-one basis as well as through group critiques. Basic and more advanced courses are offered.

Photography

Courses in this area introduce students to media, techniques, theory and practice of photography. Technical and aesthetic issues are stressed as students learn to operate a camera, expose and develop film, make prints and present their work. Visual awareness and sensitivity to communication through the photographic image is paramount. Advanced courses explore additional and more sophisticated techniques and processes.

Film, Video and Photography

In this area courses introduce students to media, techniques, theory and practice. Students learn still camera techniques and produce video/film presentations related to the history and theory of film/video production. Hands on camera editing work is augmented by film/video screenings that review the history of avant-garde film/video works.

Ceramics

These courses introduce students to media, techniques, theory and practice of ceramic sculpture. Through basic methods of hand building, glazing and firing ceramics are explored as a medium of creative expression. In both beginning and advanced classes, there is emphasis on the creation of work of a personal and exploratory nature.

Hidden Personae

Sculpture

Courses in this area introduce students to media, techniques, theory and practice. Various approaches to three-dimensional design are explored with particular sensitivity to sculptural concerns within the broader framework of contemporary art. Students create sculptures often using found materials and techniques of assemblage and wood construction. Advanced courses guide the student through independent sculptural projects.

Contemporary Art Issues Workshop

This course provides an exploration of the relationship between contemporary art issues, artist materials and methods from the view of the creative artist. Field trips and artist talks supplement the curriculum.
