ARTIST STATEMENT FOR INDO INDICIA

THE ATRIUM GALLERY

ARTIST STATEMENT
These two series of works explore the nature of how we see and perceive other cultures.  There is a long tradition of artists visiting other cultures, and in the history of art we see the influences of the Japanese woodblock prints on the Post–Impressionists or the influence of trips to Morocco on Matisse’s work.  For a contemporary artist like myself, that tradition continues as “on the ground” experience of India that defied any prior understanding that I had of the country.

In both series, fragments of photographs, which I took myself, are combined in the computer and printed archivally on canvas.  I wanted to reflect both ends of the paradigm of contemporary Indian culture:  the coexistence of both the traditional handwork that supports hundreds of thousands of artisans and craftspersons across the country, and the high level of technology and development that is art of modern India.  Both are equally important, and finding balance between the traditional and the modern seems the dilemma of modern culture.

Indo Indicia was supported in part by a grant from the University Research Committee of Emory University, and by a Fulbright Research Scholarship.
