THEME: What is home, and where is it? What does it mean to look for home, to find home, to lose home, to be at home? In whose company does home arise? Under what circumstances? At what cost? How is “home” being impacted by the current economic crisis in America? The Visual Arts Gallery at Emory University invites submissions to a juried photography exhibition on these and related issues: images (and combinations of images and words) that investigate, comment on and test various dimensions of “home”—in its familiarity and unfamiliarity, its pleasures and discomforts, its communal and personal aspects.
VENUE: The Visual Arts Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia, is Emory University’s center for the presentation of contemporary art. Approaching contemporary art as a cultural prism though which all manner of inquires pass—literary and historical, scientific and social scientific, ethical and spiritual—the gallery shows work by leading national and international artists. A courageous willingness to engage significant issues through art, an insistence on the value of diverse intelligences, an embrace of responsibility as it arises from responsiveness—these are the touchstones of the gallery’s mission within the university and the community.
Located adjacent to the university’s studio classrooms—and actively used as a vital element of liberal arts education at Emory—the gallery, designed by award-winning architects Menefee + Winer, is a versatile space of 1,100 square feet that exhibits five to seven contemporary art shows each year, including an annual student exhibition in April. To supplement its exhibitions, the gallery also presents outstanding lectures, panels, and screenings by prominent artists, curators, critics and scholars. Previous exhibitions and lectures have included Martha Rosler, Eve Andrée Laramée, Radcliffe Bailey, Alice Aycock, Pat Ward Williams, and Janine Antoni, among many others.
Picturing Home is presented as part of The Lucid Eye: A Year of Photography at Emory 2009-2010, including solo exhibitions by Joel Leivick, Dawoud Bey and Ruth Dusseault, and a show of twentieth century masterworks by Harry Callahan, William Christenberry, Robert Frank, Mario Giacomelli, Helen Levitt, Toshio Shibata, Paul Strand and others, from the collection of Arnall Golden Gregory.
ELIGIBILITY: Submission is open to all Friends of Emory Visual Arts, membership in which is included in the entry fee for Picturing Home. Images created via any form of photography will be accepted for consideration. Art must be original, created by the person who enters that work. Previously exhibited work will be accepted.
JURORS: The exhibition’s jurors are Julian Cox, curator of photography at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and Jason Francisco, associate professor of photography and chair of the Visual Arts Department at Emory University.
ENTRY FEE: An entry fee of $35 ($30 for Emory staff, faculty, and alumni) for up to five digital images, and $5 each for each additional image, entitles all entrants to membership in the Friends of Emory Visual Arts. Current Friends with a valid membership through December 31, 2009 are eligible to enter without the entry fee. Contact Mary Catherine Johnson at mcjohn7@emory.edu or 404-712-4397 with questions about membership status.
