Careers in Art - INTERNSHIPS

Numerous internships are available to Visual Arts students, and these provide good employment experience in the student's area of interest. These internships include working for galleries, museums, arts centers, and arts publications.

The Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences is an artist residency program in the North Georgia Mountains. Please visit the website for further information about the Center. (www.hambidge.org) Interns would work in the Center’s office at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center and/or at the home offices of the Executive Director or Board members in Atlanta. The Center proposes an internship program with students in Emory’s Art History Department and Visual Arts Program. Interns working in Atlanta would assist the Hambidge Center with all aspects of public relations, development, and fund raising activities. Particular intern activities would include development of a data base both for fund-raising and the residency program, assistance with registering of artwork for its annual auction, contact with artists, mounting of the exhibition, creation of a published catalogue, and communication with artists, patrons and the public. Interns would have contact with various elements of the art world, and develop knowledge of the many aspects of administering a non-profit arts organization. Students would also have opportunities, if they desire, to visit the Hambidge Center in its beautiful 600 acre mountain setting.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Katherine Mitchell of the Emory Visual Arts Department will receive applications for the internship and interview applicants for the Center, she will then pass her recommendations on to the appropriate person at the Hambidge Center. The person under whom the intern will work most closely is Anne Tracht, who has oversight of the November art auction. The intern will assist with receiving the work for auction, cataloguing the works of art, preparing the published catalogue for the auction, handling the documentation of sales of work, correspondence with artists, patrons, etc., and preparations for this gala event. The intern would work under the direction of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the Hambidge Center. After the auction in November, there would be the on-going work of developing the artist residency program, public relations, patron development, promotion of the Center, planning of future events, etc. Four credit hours will be offered for this internship. Katherine Mitchell will remain the point person to make certain that the intern is in contact with the appropriate Hambidge staff and directors and that the internship is a meaningful learning experience.
